Problems with different continent versions

Sadly, Amazon.com doesn’t ship PS3 outside North America. And even if they did, you would face lot’s of different problems: NTSC/PAL compatibility (your TV probably would only show you black/white screen, or garbled screen), different voltage in different continents (110v in North America v.s. 220v in Europe). So even if you had converter for electricity, you would have problem with a screen. Save yourself from trouble, and get the version which is good for you.

There is only one advantage, but it’s huge! And it’s, of course, PRICE! You will never ever get such good prices, which you could get on Ebay. Of course, sometimes they could be beat by your local suppliers, if they have a huge sale. But that’s usually only for a very short time, and in the long run, Ebay always has the lowest prices. So don’t be too shy and explore your options before you make buying decision.

Shipping

Few years ago a real problem was the shipping to your place. There was many cases where packets would went missing, or sellers would not ship the item at all, even after they charge you the money. Well, now all these problems are gone. Paypal (main Ebay payment method) offers you incredibly good protection – if you don’t receive your item in 45 days, you can get your money back. In my experience (from 200+ purchases on Ebay), I had to ask for refund only 3 times, and all of the times I got my money back. To tell you the truth, later I got the items too.. but they came 3 or 4 months late. Some country customs are very strict. Make sure you repay seller after you get the item, if you already got your refund!

Warranty

Usually sellers offer you some kind of warranty (1 year in most cases), just be aware that you will have to ship the broken console to them, and probably will have to pay for the shipping too. But I wouldn’t be too concerned about these things, since PS3 are build quality is very high, it’s very unlikely to get it broken in the first year

Well, it’s mainly human error. If you pay close attention to the description of the auction, you probably will end up with correct version, so don’t worry. If you still worried, you can contact seller before buying/bidding the item, and ask if this console will work in your country/with your TV.
